Labor Union in the United States
The United States Labor Unions can be considered as a sorted out gathering that generally speak to the laborers from their workers, intended to lawfully work as an agent in a lawful way, in the different field or ventures. Their exercises are focused in the aggregate expecting wage increment, the correct usage of advantages, great working conditions, and filled in as a delegate if the organization ignores or damages arrangements from the agreement. Beside these central focuses, the Labor Unions likewise filled in as a political impact (explicitly inside the Democratic Party) through various alliances with a similar rule situated activists and through key preparation planned for reinforcing the quantities of their memberships. The advancement of Labor Union in the United States dated route once again from the eighteenth Century. From the origination of the National Labor Union and the Knights of Labor-which were brief, trailed by the ascent of the American Federation of Labor in 1886. The 1900 saw the development of the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905, the possible parting of the AFL in 1938 and the introduction of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), the merger of AFL and CIO in 1955, and the establishing of the Change to Win Federation which rose subsequent to parting from the AFL-CIO umbrella in 2005. All in all, the historical backdrop of the United States Labor Union was arranged into four: The early Unions, the work history from 1900-1932, work history from 1932-1955, the work history from 1955 to 2005, and the worker's organization at present.Within these periods, a few remarkable and significant occasions happened, for example, the Pullman strike and the Haymarket revolt (somewhere in the range of 1886 and 1894), the coal strikes (1900-1902), Dual Unionism, Gompers and AFL, Railroad Brotherhoods, the impact of World War 1 and 2, the New Deal Labor Policy, New Deal Coalition and PAC, Taft-Hartley Act, issues of defilements, social equali ty development, the ascent of the Public Sector Unions, the decrease of the private area associations, the NAFTA and the International Trade threat. The first neighborhood worker's guild (the Early Unions), the Order of the Knights of St. Crispin, was built up in 1867 having a surmised of around 50,000 individuals by year 1870. The gathering opposed certain infringements of a few hardware and the matter of non-gifted work with respect to the independence of such talented laborers. Despite the fact that thought about the biggest association around then, the gathering was inadequately scattered that caused to its decay and inevitable abolishment. After the abolishment of the Order of the Knights, the Knights of Labor was set up in 1869. It was viewed as the main utilitarian and powerful worker's guild or association through an exertion of enrolling the workers in their positions as well as had faith in ensuring the basic interests of all gatherings occupied with creation. à Their pione er, Terence Powderly, started a few causes through the impact of legislative issues or by helpful tie-ups and adventures. Despite the fact that he trusted towards accomplishing their causes, the Union fallen on its first enormous strike during the Hayment Riot in 1886.In 1886, after the abolishment of the Knights of Labor, the American Federation of Labor was built up. It was contained for the most part of confederations of gifted specialists capable of setting the authoritative model being utilized until today. During this change, from the Order of the Knights to the foundation of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), a significant strike unfolded that additional much critical impacts on U.S. prudent status. The Pullman strike, occurred on June 26, 1894 with around 125,000 laborers on a surmised 29 railroad stations, quit their work as opposed to chipping away at Pullman Palace Car Company. The reason for the strike was the declined choice of the organization to diminish lease on the town of Pullman. The impact was a complete creation shutdown of the Pullman manufacturing plants that in the long run prompted a lock out. US Marshals and roughly 2,000 warriors were sent to separate the strike, leaving around $340,000 worth of harm properties, 57 injured and 13 strikers killed. The American Federation of Labor or AFL was built up by Samuel Gompers. The organization included for the most part of talented and untalented laborers, aside from the African American and ladies who were barred. This began the Labor Union history from 1900-1932, and from this period a few improvements unfolded, for example, the expansion in unionized wages, the making of Clayton Act of 1914, the establishment of the Norris-LaGuardia Act in 1932, the alliance framed by the Socialist Party of America, and the most widely recognized occasions strikes. The Coal strike of 1900-1902 was viewed as one of the most exhaustive strikes at any point happened making a political emergency on a national scale. It was led by the United Mine Workers on the Midwest that began in 1900. The United States President around then, Theodore Roosevelt, made a trade off on the excavators on expanding their wages for shorter hours yet rejected the perspective on perceiving the association as the laborers delegate in the bartering table.Another strike that unfolded was the Great Railroad Strike occurred in 1922, wherein an across the nation strike was led by shop laborers of the railroad. The reason for the strike was the choice of the Railroad Labor Board to cut seven pennies from the laborers compensation in this way making threatening vibe and a surmised 400,000 positions abandoned by the strikers. The strike in the long run subsided on a neighborhood level since a portion of the shop laborers did settled on concurrences with the railways after. The Labor history of 1932-1955 saw the establishing of another powerful Union in the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), established by John Llewellyn Lewis, who inevitably likewise the President of the United Mine Workers or UMW. The CIO was instrumental in the foundation of the United Steel Workers of America or the USWA that comprised of around a great many composed gathering of mechanical specialists during the 1930ââ¬â¢s.His want to grow the unionââ¬â¢s enrollment and obtain in sorting out the steel business lead to an exertion of arranging steel laborers. This put him into a difference between the AFL since he was worried on sorting out every single mechanical association and laborers in a particular industry rather than in a specific art or exchange aptitude as it were. à The strife was then settled by building up the CIO yet the pioneer of the AFL, William Green, restricted such. The CIO would have liked to have a difference in arrangement inside the AFL with respect to their mechanical sorting out however the AFL regarded them as a foe and opposition emerged prompting the conventional foundation of the CIO in 1938 to turn into its adversary organization association. From that point forward the CIO was instrumental in a few plunk down strikes, for example, the Flint plunk down strike, and the Chrysler plunk down strike. Their real individuals were approximated at 2,850,000 from different individuals from the neighborhood worker's guilds, for example, originating from the Steel Workers, Electrical Workers, Amalgamated Clothing Workers, Rubber Workers, and United Mine Workers. (Karson, 1958).The exchanges of the Flint Sit-Down strike drove the route for the foundation of the United Auto Workers Union or UAW in 1936-1937. Walter Reuther assumed responsibility for the association during the war and before long started some significant strikes. The UAW inevitably drove the route for the converging of the AFL and the CIO in 1955.From 1955 to introduce, the trade guilds comprised of two significant associations: the Change to Win Federation who said a final farewell to the ALF-CIO in 2005, a nd the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations. The two gatherings advocates enactments and arrangements in favor to the laborers of the United States and Canada, took dynamic investment in governmental issues explicitly preferring the Democratic Party. While the AFL-CIO is worried about exchange gives a worldwide viewpoint, the Change to Win Federation is concerned more in issues including residential Craft labor.Union individuals from the private division have been seriously directed by the NLRA or the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. The associations are typically controlled it might be said by state laws and halfway by government laws. Subsequently it brought about significant development rates, and working conditions just as the wages are carried into dealings with the chosen state and neighborhood authorities, consequently upgrading the political impacts of the Unions.Other indication of unionism may incorporate Solidarity unionism, minority unio nism, and the works on being utilized by an association like the Industrial Workers of the World. The American Union participation explicitly in the private segment has fallen by an estimated of 9% .and just the Commercial gathering held some half of association portrayal. It additionally stayed a fundamental political impact and the capital portability, financial progression, and globalization improved in an enormous manner inspiring the way of life being delighted in by the American laborers. From a genuine perspective the Labor Union in the United States filled in as a good example for work Domestic power. Itââ¬â¢s filled in as a delegate, a mediator, for the social specialists government assistance against the infringement of the Company to accomplish explicit game plans that will profit the two laborers and the Administration.ReferencesCommons, John R. Albert Einstein Essays - Einstein Family, Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein Essays - Einstein Family, Albert Einstein Albert Einstein When numerous individuals hear the name Albert Einstein, they state, Ooh what did he do, compose a lot of stuff on a blackboard, demonstrate to certain researchers that he was correct, and afterward star in a Pepsi business? Indeed, Im here to reveal to you that he did considerably more than that, (despite the fact that I truly like that Pepsi business.) Albert Einstein was conceived March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Wrttemberg, Germany. Albert started his broad investigations at a school in Munich. At Munich he sought after a profession in Electrical Engineering, however bombed a test and was dismissed from Eidgenssische Technische Hochschule in Zurich. Subsequent to fizzling at his unique selection of schools, he went on to an auxiliary school in Aarau to prepare himself enough to be conceded into ETH (his unique decision). While at Aarau he anticipated turning into an instructor in science and material science. True to form he graduated from ETH in the year 1900 with a degree in educating for the subjects of Math and Physics. He didnt anyway find a new line of work immediately, he, truth be told, circumvented keeping in touch with various colleges applying for one. In the wake of looking for about a year, he at long last found an occupation at a secondary school educating science. While at this school he wrote in one of his diaries, I have surrendered the aspiration to get to a University After he experienced this activity, and in fact a couple more, his companion from school, Marcel Grossmann searched him out so his dad could assist him with finding a new line of work. After a proposal to the executive of licenses, Einstein held a brief patent post, holding the title, Technical Expert Third Class. He was advanced a few times over a range of around 5 years. While working at the patent office, he completed a boatload of hypothetical material science distributions. He even earned a doctorate on one from the University of Zurich. This paper was entitled, On another assurance of sub-atomic measurements. In the wake of distributing a couple of more papers, he started to be perceived. He turned into a college teacher. Following a couple of long periods of addressing for Universities, he started to travel. Numerous individuals accept that he moved away from Germany because on account of the counter Jewish developments. He visited the U.S. a couple of times just as numerous different nations. Be that as it may, in 1935, Einstein was allowed lasting residency in the USA. As a US resident, Einstein was attributed for some new commitments to science. Be that as it may, his greatest known task in the US is the help he gave in the Atomic Bomb. On August second 1939, Einstein kept in touch with Franklin D. Roosevelt, (at that point the leader of the US.) Him and a couple of different researchers cautioned him about Germanys investigations of Uranium, the way in to a nuclear bomb. Roosevelt was then disposed to begin his own undertaking, the Manhattan Project. A venture exclusively created to find a strategy to make a nuclear bomb. After around 6 years of Einstein working close by other extraordinary personalities of history, a last item was presented. Code named Gadget, the nuclear bomb was accompanied to the test site in Los Alamos. Here they would all watch to see the size of their creation. On July sixteenth, 1945, at the hour of 5:29:45 (mountain war time) the A-bomb, as it was called, was exploded. It at that point created a mushroom cloud 30,000 feet high. Every one of that was left at the impact site were sections of jade green glass, delivered from the warmth and the sand. A significant number of the bombs makers had various perspectives on the achievement of the venture. J. Robert Oppenheimer thought the venture was an all out progress. One of different makers was cited as saying, Now were all bastards. Einstein concurred, he additionally didnt like what he saw. His perspective on it was that they had made a beast. He spent a great part of an amazing remainder battling to dispose of the bomb. Be that as it may, his requests were disregarded. His last letter was to a man named Bertrand Russell, in it he requested to be put on a proclamation asking the world to hang up their atomic weapons. He kicked the bucket on the eighteenth of April in 1955 at the town of Princeton, New Jersey, directly here in

FINALS!!!
FINALS!!! Hey guys, Okay, so lets all collectively take a deep breath, count to 10, and then let it out, because were all going to be fine. Yes, I understand finals are upon us, whether youre in high school still, or in college, but its going to be okay. With several classes to study for, several papers to write, and a project to finish, I can empathize with my fellow students who might be freaking out right now, and what Im about to tell you might seem crazy, but hang with me on this one. Go have fun Yes, thats right, go have fun. You can study every day before your finals until the break of dawn, but if youre so stressed and sleep deprived that you can barely function, you wont be much use to yourself when it matters most. So let me be your friendly guide on how to relax and take appropriate study breaks, that will leave you recharged, and ready to hit the books once again. Watch your favorite show Theres nothing quite like watching your favorite characters go about their daily life adventures on the screen; its relaxing seeing something thats familiar that isnt an equation, an essay, or an explanation of the history of fauna. WARNING: Do not get lost in a whole season of your favorite TV show! Limit it to an hour tops! You still have to study remember? (Image found on http://www.digitaltrends.com/movies/best-netflix-instant-movies/2/) Go out for a snack Nothing too heavy, because you dont want to be drowsy afterwards. Try a small helping of some comfort food, like ice cream. For those of you who have been to the Illinois campus, my first choice would for sure be Cocomero. And while youre at it, take a friend; laugh, eat, forget about your responsibilities for just a little while. Once you return to your studies, youll feel like a weight has been lifted off of your shoulders, and you can get anything done. (Image found on http://www.chambanamoms.com/2010/05/25/fro-tastic-date-night-at-cocomero/) Take a nap Probably my favorite, yet most dangerous option. Yes, taking a nap can recharge those batteries that have been running low at this end of the semester, however you run the danger of turning your nap into a full fledged 8 hour siesta. Make sure you set plenty of alarms, or have a friend or roommate keep an eye on how long youve been out. Psychic Export Market - Free Essay Example
Coursework Header Sheet 130795-287 Course Course School/Level Coursework Assessment Weight Tutor Submission Deadline 000355877 . Tutors comments Grade Awarded___________ For Office Use Only__________ Final Grade_________ Moderation required: yes/no Tutor______________________ Date _______________ A review of psychic distance and their implications on the network relations of SMEââ¬â¢s in international business. Introduction This literature review will be based on how psychic distance will have an impact on how organisations employ global marketing strategies; how cultural and political factors play an important role when an organisation chooses to have foreign business interest. It also provides a critic of the global strategy by citing emergence of triad markets and a research on a suggested business term, which is brought upon as an implication of exporting of global trading. Psychic distance has in many ways a major impact on how SMEââ¬â¢s networking is measured. Through the different articles that I have studied there are many theories which can be applied. Export development Exporting is one of the most common ways in which SMEââ¬â¢s will enter the global market. This is seen as an advantage as to other market strategies because there is low risk. Psychic distance has shown that SMEââ¬â¢s have to face challenges such as difference in language, consumer behaviour, cultural standards, legal framework or purchasing power. Bilkey and Tesar (1977), for example, advise firms to initate exports with culturally close markets, before they enter more psychically distant. (Barbara Stottinger, 1998, p. 357) Other studies have stated the five main aspects would be: language of the country; accepted business practices; economic environment; legal system; and communication infrastructure Also there is the aspect of cultural dimension of psychic distance within SMEââ¬â¢s when operationalising the construct. For example taking Hofstedeââ¬â¢s (1980) measures uncertainty avoidance and cultural distance to form a composite index of cultural distance. However it is argued that summary character suuch as perosnality, value orientation renders the concept of psychic distance an outhstanding preedictor for exort behaviour. the general nature of geographical diversity that a SME will face would be as mentioned above. (Barbara Stottinger, 1998, p. 357) Furthermore analysing the concept of psychic distance with the relationship to export activities with countries. Psychic distance is not based how far geographically the country is but its maps the individually precieved distances between the home and target market which effects Geographic closeness usually results not only economic relation, but manifest itself also in more cultural and social interactions, which a re supposed to reduce pyshic distance. From my reseach it indicated that psychic distance showed no significant effect on export performance also that export distance did not have a siginficant impact on the change of export performance over time. The study of Oââ¬â¢Grady and Lane have suggested that business factors, such as legal and compettitve envirpoments, need to be incleded when conceptulisng distance. (Barbara Stottinger, 1998, p. 359) Importance of psychic realtions The research has also indicated the higher the level of psychic distnace, the greater the time and effort required to develop successful business realtionships. There are various implementations invovled in relationship marketing startegy in international markets. My studies indicate that the higher the level of psychic distance, the greater the effort required. If this is the case then this would usggest that the consitiuent varoables of psychic distance should be important factors influenncing the development of SMEââ¬â¢s and ther networking relationship marketing startegies. When SMEââ¬â¢s are exporting internationally it is important to consider that the important factors would be commitment as this would be a social bonding, as a degree of mutual personal friendships and liking shared by the buyer and seller. (Tony Conway, 2000, p. 1391) Buyers and sellers who have a strong personal realtionship are more commited to maintaing the relationship than less socially bonded partners. Many aspects of relations between customers and suppliers cannot be formalised or based on legal criteria. Instead realtionships have to based on mutaul trust. (Ford, 1984, p.18) Along with commitment trust is a vital factor, these key elements in a realtionship as they encourage marketers to work at preserving relationship investments, by co-operating with exchange partners. With exprtong internationally, networking for SMEs there are many complications, once again it has been pointed out that the greater the distance, the harder to achieve and more rescoure intensive will be process of relationship development. (Tony Conway, 2000, p. 1399) For example when partners will view one anotehr as culturally dissimliar, the feeling of lack of common graound may result in higher degree of percieved behavioural uncertainty. As a consquence the parties may be more likely to place their trust in leagal and written documents. (Morosini 1998 p.140) The more diffe rent the other personââ¬â¢s culture seems, the greater the degree of culture distance. Cultural distance is a potentionally powerful determinat of the way relationships can develop. Working in an international context, the usccess (or otheriwse) of an research marketing based tsragety is dependant both on the stage of relationship development on the degree of psychic distance that exists. Exporting through psychic distance Assumptions of psychic distance is negaticley related with export development and organisational performance. It is argued that businesses whose home country is characterised by a huigh leve of economic development, and developed and concentraed industry structure will perfom well, if not better, in developing marekt because if the distinct opportunity that are available. From my research studies have chosen me that the operating psychillcally close country does not necessarily lead to superior performance. Therefore networking internationally for SMEââ¬â¢s either can be a negative factor or a poistive. Furher I have taken into account other elments as findings have indicated to me that they did not support a negative realtionship the concluded that psychic distance has very limited explanatory power. However the study has indicated that SMEs seeking to expand into more foreign markets as the the results indicate that they do not need to focus on similar markets only. (Jod y Evans, 2000, p.164) From my findings other articles indicate that the significance of key factors in SMEs and the external relationships they are able to develop support through internationalisation. As above they articles have not really seen psychic distance as a good impact. One of the explanations would point towards the networks in providing assistance and over coming initial resource and competency gaps. Effective functions of the networks depends on the quality of inter-personal relationships that sustain them. (Bilkey,W.J, Tesar, G 1977 p. 93) There are a range of factors that may trigger and facilitate SME internationalisation has encouraged the integrative modeling of how they contribute to different internationlisation pathways. The theory of Crick and Spencer also added that subsequent internationalisation sometimes required the development of new networks, and was contingent on a whole host of events, whereas further penetration of existing markets could be faci lied by existing networks. I have decided to explain the significance of exporting through Brazil and how UK SMEs were able to network internationally. SMESs will try and expand their business in order to offer themselves new opportunity for market expansion. However studies show that there is a threat to their existing markets. For example I have taken a greater study in Brazil and from this the big attraction was the gas and oil sectors. The way in the Brazilians communicated would be a form of personal meeting which provided a business type of relationship as a new entry to their market. From this the company now accounts for 10 percent of their 14 total export sales values. The relationship that they were able to build through there exports was socio-commercial. (Johanson and Vshlne, 1977, p. 23) This helped as having a strong relationship with a Brazilian partner can be quite functional for coping with an uncertain and distant environments. Studies of Brazilian culture portray it as strongly oriented towards sociability and inter-personal relationships. it also characterised by high levels of conflict avoidance and ambiguity. These features will reinforce the need to conduct business transactions on a basis of personal liking and trust rather than heavily relying on formal and contractual agreements. (Rodrigues and Barros, 2002, p.528). The value of internationlising SMEs of accessing overseas networks is now receiving greater attention. Networking is a very important factor as the study for the Brazilian market indicated. One of the company did business in Brazil explained that going out their you need to build network of friends and contacts. Although mentioned that the bureaucratic side of things that they still did not really understand. However that is very important to have someone that they could rely on. However as going to a new country their will always be a challenge as language and is trust are the main keys elements (Article 1, p. 14). This can make it difficult for foreign SMEs to establish contacts with relevant business networks without local help. Some SMEs have reported that in order to network in Brazil by the various exports -promoting agencies. the quality of local people who can link a UK company into wider networks, and the quality of relationships forged with them, emerge as crucial success factors. (Article 1, p. 15) Studies have indicated that companies have been unsuccessful, in the oil and gas sector however this was linked to networking. The companies were not able to find reliable employees or agents who they could network through. This indicates that networking is very important and getting it right as well in the process can either make you successful or unsuccessful. It shows that the companies entering the new foreign market environment are not just technical in nature, Social and culturally-sensitive skills are required. As mentioned above this would apply the theories set a bove for psychic distance. It shows that there are various factors that will need to be implemented such as how socially different countries are and language, education etc. Psychic distance whist exporting in Brazil The size and growth of the foreign markets might have attracted an offset in the minds of business decisions makers and problems posed by psychic distance. This could be the case, for example, with decisions to do business with China, and it might also apply to other larger emerging markets such as Brazil. Firms may therefore opt to engage with large and dynamic economies before approaching other countries that exhibit lower levels of psychic distance. (Article 2, p. 5) The cultural distance includes differences in language and social norms; administrative distance includes differences in political system, government policies and institutions; and economic distance includes differences in income levels, infrastructure, human and other resources. From this study the greatest distances tended to be perceived in language, regulations and legal system. The largest gap between psychic and its impact was for the system, followed by geographical distance. The dimension with the mid- point was the differences in languages and the regulations between Brazil and the UK. From the data to the importance of different dimensions of psychic distance in the internationalization process. Yet many firms decided to expand to Brazil despite perceived differences. The way that companies were able to over come this issue and the problems they faced was the help of competent and trusted Brazilian agent, distributor or partner. (Article 2, p.16). This will lead to fewer difficulties due to the differences in culture, educational level, logistics, regulations and business ethics and overall will make networking efficient which leads to good performance for exporting. Further more, the encompasses that determinants of a firms export behaviour highlights that synthesis is possible at two broad levels (Aaby and Slater, 1989; Ford and Leonidou, 1991): The external environment level, that includes factors that the individual exporter can only control to a very limited extent, such as macro-economic, social, physical, cultural, and political aspects, as well as industry characteristics that influence export behaviour and performance; and The firm level, also referred to as organizational determinants, that includes those structural and behavioural aspects within the firm that have a potential effect on exporting (Leonidou, 1998a). Initially highlighting the three categories of internal determinants of export behaviour analysed, namely structural characteristics, managerial characteristics, and managerial attitude and perceptions about export activity, helped explain the three export variables under study: export intention; propensity; and intensity. First, export intention was positively related to: a firms competitive position in new product development; and managerial perception that export is advantageous for their firms, as it may improve both global competitiveness and corporate performance. Second, export propensity was positively influenced by: a firms experience in geographic market development; and managers foreign language proficiency. (Sonia M. Suà ¡rez-Ortega, Francisca R. à lamo-Vera, 2005, p. 258) Finally, export intensity is positively associated with a firms experience in geographic market development, and managers foreign language proficiency and experience abroad, while negatively affected by the importance given by managers to the lack of internal resources acting as a barrier to export. In sum, these findings could be suggesting that there exist differences in the set of determinants of exporting when export intention, export propensity, or export intensity is the dependent variable under analysis. Conclusion The various articles have shown a similar understanding in how SMEs network internally and apply this to the literature review, the different the views clearly show that psychic distance does not really consist in the business world today. However the importance of psychic distance between countries has diminished as a result of the increased interaction brought about through the globalization of markets. The studies do not support negative relationship they could conclude that psychic distance has very limited explanatory power. However, the study has important implications for firms seeking to expand into foreign markets as the results indicate that they do not need to focus on similar markets only. However it could be argued that psychic distance does not directly influence the exporting behavior for SMEs. References Books: International business: environments and operation; John D. The Body Image And Advertisements - 1630 Words
Body Image and Advertisements In roughly three decades, the number of advertisement exposed to consumers daily went from 500 in the 1970ââ¬â¢s to as many as 5000 today (Johnson, 2006). Fashion advertisements often promote models that have an ideal body which is often models with thin bodies (Diedrichs Lee 2011). Consequently, these advertisements set unrealistic standards to the public (Yu, Damhorst Russell, 2011). Researchers have found that consumers are constantly comparing themselves to media ideals which could affect their body image (Yu, Damhorst Russell, 2011). Body image is ââ¬Å"the way an individual perceives their physical self, but more importantly the thoughts and feelings the person experience due to that perceptionâ⬠(Healey, 2014). There are four aspects of body image, it includes perceptual, affective, cognitive and behavioural (Healey, 2014). Perceptual is the way you see yourself (Healey, 2014). Affective is the way you feel about the way you look (Heal ey, 2014). Cognitive is the thoughts and beliefs you have about your body (Healey, 2014). Behavioural is the things you do in relation to the way you look (Healey, 2014). These aspects are taken into consideration whenever a consumer compares their own body to those that are shown in fashion advertisements. In addition, study have shown that someone that has a negative body image is associated with physical and psychological health problems (Diedrichs Lee, 2011). The Odyssey Report - 1377 Words
The Odyssey Report In The Odyssey , Homer uses guest-host relationships as an ethical norm against which behavior is measured. When the ritual is preformed correctly by guest-host, good results ensue. In contrast, the violations of this ethical norm results in misfortune. This idea was taken very seriously by people of that time and it can be found throughout the story. A great example of a guest host relationship where both the guest and the host behave properly is the relationship between Telemachos and King Menelaos. As a guest Telemachos treats his host with respect and dignity. He address menelaos as my lord to give reverence to his kindness and to be polite. Telemachos is very complimentary to his host by saying Zeus mustâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is another way he is a bad guest because he takes what he wants even without it being offered to him. Upon Polyphemos return he to shows he can be a bad host because he picked up a great huge stone and placed it in the doorway which made escape almost impossible. He continues his streak of meanness by eating some of Odysseus men. It says he devoured them like a mountain lion, bowels and flesh and marrow- bones and left nothing. Odysseus get angry and devises a plan which will allow him to escape. He then takes a wooden rod and thrust the sharp point into his eye and leaned hard on it from above and turned it round and round. This is the punishment Polyphemos receives for his being a bad host. However Odysseus also receives a punishment for entering into Polyphemos house without permission and being a bad guest. His punishment is the great loss of men which he receives, his quick evacuation of the island, and the anger he brings to Poseidon; which causes him to have the suitors come to his house and reek havoc in his kingdom. The final example of a guest-host relationship in which both the guest and host act unaccordingly is Odysseus and the suitors. Odysseus reaches his home and finds his house in shambles. The suitors continuously refer to Odysseus as a nuisance and at one point one of them decides to show his anger. Then picking up the footstool, he threwShow MoreRelatedThe Birth of the Gods in Homers Odyssey1548 Words à |à 7 PagesThe Odyssey à à à Prehistoric man did not question his existence and reality - he just lived as one with nature.
